PORGY AND BESS   Savoy Theatre

George and Ira Gershwin's classic, Porgy and Bess, premieres at London's Savoy Theatre in a major new £3 million musical production adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn.

A bittersweet love story set in South Carolina during the Great Depression, the work features arguably one of the greatest, most beautiful and moving musical scores ever written for the stage, including such classics as Summertime, I Got Plenty o' Nothin', It Ain't Necessarily So and I Loves You, Porgy.

This new production, drawing on the story's southern roots, will also bring together one of the biggest companies in the West End, with a cast of 40 performers and a 20-piece orchestra.

Savoy Theatre
Savoy Theatre - Designed by C J Phipps and built in 1881 for Richard D'Oyly Carte who was responsible for bringing together W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, this theatre was the first public building to be lit by electricity and is now a Grade II listed building.   Productions in the early years were almost exclusively Gilbert and Sullivan and became known as the Savoy operas.   Their long reign is marked by full-length portraits hanging in the theatre.   After the First World War the switch to plays reflected changing tastes and brought to the stage such names as John Gielgud, Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier.   One of the few London theatres to still have a box at the back of the circle, it was a favourite with Winston Churchill who always had a front-row seat in the box.   The building was destroyed by fire in 1990 but has since been rebuilt and fully restored.
If you can't find the seats you are looking for it doesn't necessarily mean the show is sold out.
